Blame It On the Rain

Notes: This story is Beccabo's contribution to a challenge posted on the Scrubs board about writing a short fic based on three different choices, and one of them was a kiss in the rain.

Dr. Robin Scorpio had just finished another double shift, working seventeen straight hours at General Hospital. It was the third time this week, but she didn’t mind. She loved being at the hospital, in the middle of all that was going on. It was the reason she had decided to stay in Port Charles. But tonight, she was thankful for the time off. She had a rare evening to herself...and absolutely no idea how she was going to spend it. So, she decided to begin with a walk through the park.

Life doesn't end at the doors of the hospital. You know what they say -- this isn't a dress rehearsal. Dr. Patrick Drake’s words rang through her head, as they had so many times in the past few weeks. How had he, one of the most arrogant and self absorbed people she knew, been able to reach right into her soul and pull that out? Was she really that transparent?

Robin stopped to sit on a nearby park bench, deep in her thoughts, her gloved hands folded tightly around her upper body. A cool breeze stroked her face and made her long, wavy auburn hair fly about her shoulders. It made her tremble a little, but she was used to it, for she was trembling all the time because of the coldness inside. She tried to keep herself from crying, but one rebellious tear still ran down her cheek. How had she ended up as this pitiful version of herself in so short a time?

She had buried herself so deep in her fear that she had forgotten how to live. It was so easy to hide in her research and pretend that it was actually a noble attempt to make the world a better place. While it was her desire to make the world better, it was also her desire to hide from that world for just a little longer. Until she was strong enough to face anymore of the disappointments life decided to throw at her.

Shaking those thoughts from her mind, Robin decided to take a good look at the world around her. The world she had been hiding from for so long. Rain was coming. She could smell it in the air, a subtle promise, a freshness that guaranteed that all things could be washed away and made new again. That assurance hung in the air like a whispered word on a breezeless day.

How she longed for the rain. Robin closed her eyes and remembered how she used to dance for hours in the rain, much to the amusement of her parents. She smiled at the memory of how her father used to laugh and twirl her about as the rain soaked them both, yet neither one cared one bit. For they were alive and free and completely happy. She yearned for the days when she felt those things.

Opening her eyes, Robin peered skywards and her smile widened as she spotted black clouds rolling in. The light breeze had picked up, the gentle gusts brushing softly against her skin in a delightful way, and she reached up to flick her hair back, reveling in the warm feeling of the wind brushing across her neck.

That was when the rain began. One huge peal of thunder shook the Heavens and the clouds ripped wide open. She was soaked through in seconds, and the ground turned to mud at her feet.

Robin looked up at the sky and tried to keep her eyes open to watch the drops as they fell in long strings, but they were too many and they were too strong. The biggest ones were fleeting kisses on her cheeks and all of them tasted so very sweet. Life doesn't end at the doors of the hospital. You know what they say -- this isn't a dress rehearsal. Robin suddenly reminded herself how great it was to be alive, since all too often she forgot and she laughed a little. Then she thanked God. She even cried a little, because who would know.

A mighty boom rolled across the sky, and Robin’s eyes lit up, shining with exuberance. Before she had time to talk herself out it, Robin stood up and began to dance. She closed her eyes and imagined that her father was right there with her and that she was safe in his loving arms once more.

Patrick ran through the park, pulling the collar of his coat up around his neck and tried to duck the falling raindrops. It was no use. Why he had chosen to take this short cut through the park, he would never know. But now he was late and wet. And none too happy.

It was then that he saw her, off to the left, all alone in the clearing. Dancing in the rain. Patrick had to smirk to himself at the sight of the always professional Dr. Robin Scorpio twirling like a schoolgirl in the rain. And enjoying every minute of it. Patrick stopped where he was, closed his eyes, and turned his face up to the downpour. Several moments passed as he let the rain spatter on his face, and then he leveled those eyes at her again.

He stood there watching her as Robin danced to nature's music, unaware at how drenched in water she was. She twirled and moved her arms as if she were an angel in the heavens; as if there was a wondrous meaning to life. She turned at that moment, eyes closed, so that he could see her face. Although rain fell upon her beautiful face, he saw tears forming in her eyes and falling down her cheeks. A jolt of pain hit his heart as he thought about the complete happiness and complete sadness that consumed her at the same time.

"What are you doing?" Patrick called out, startling Robin out of her daydream.

Robin stopped mid-twirl, her eyes flying open, and faced Patrick. She was completely embarrassed at having him see her like that, but there was no way to back out of it now. So, she simply said, "I’m dancing with my dad."

"In the rain?"

A fresh batch of tears threatened to trickle down her cheeks and she just let them fall. Her face was wet from the rain and he probably couldn’t tell the difference. "We used to dance in the rain all the time when I was little. I felt so alive and I..."

"...wanted to capture a little of that feeling again?" He finished for her.

"Life doesn't end at the doors of the hospital, Patrick." She repeated his words back to him with a smile. "You know what they say -- this isn't a dress rehearsal."

"I think I’ve heard that." Patrick chuckled and moved toward her. "You know, my mom taught me when I was little, that if you dance when it’s pouring down rain with someone you care about, or a close friend, and make a wish… it comes true."

"But you’re the only one here." Robin teased, liking the way he looked all wet, with his hair plastered to his forehead.

"So, pretend that we’re friends." He said, opening his arms and taking a step forward with a wide grin on his face, "Come on, let’s dance." He said, grabbing both her hands. Their hands clasped, Patrick stepped up to Robin, and he unlinked one of his hands from hers, placing it around her waist. She slipped her hand up to his shoulder and soon they were slow dancing in the rain. It poured down and both were laughing, just moving together like they didn’t know they could.

Patrick led the dance, pulling Robin closer to him. A warm sensation went through his veins at being so close to her. Then, Robin released their interlocked fingers, and wrapped her arms around his neck, smiling. Patrick smiled back, holding her tight with both his arms around her now.

"I had no idea you were such a great dancer." Robin mused.

"There are a lot of things you don’t know about me." Patrick admitted, chuckling. "Besides, dancing is like sex only you do it standing up. So, I, of course...."

Robin rolled her eyes and said, "Please! Could you spare me the tales of your sexual prowess for just one evening?" Patrick agreed with a grin and the rain seemed to ease up slightly as they danced around in circles, left and right.

"Made your wish yet?" Patrick asked, looking down at her.

Robin smiled, closed her eyes and then after a few moments, she opened them again, "Done."

"What did you wish for?"

"If I told you, then I risk it not coming true." She replied.

"When it comes true, will you tell me then?"

Robin considered his request for a moment and said, "Deal." He grinned, leading her in a twirl, the water splashing beneath their feet, rain falling harder again. "I feel so… alive!" She shouted to him over the sound of the rain. Patrick laughed, letting go of her, allowing her go about her own twirling once again, which was beginning to make her dizzy. Robin spun around and around several times, finally stopping, hunched over with her hands on her knees as she tried to settle her head from the dizzy spell that hit her. She was still laughing, even when Patrick walked up to her, helping her get steady on her feet.

"I think we’ve had enough for one night. It’s late…" He said, gazing up toward the sky.

The smile on Robin’s face partly faded, "Not yet, Patrick. I just don’t want this to end."

Unable to stop himself, Patrick pulled her into his arms again and Robin tried to catch the breath that had been taken from her. Patrick placed a finger under her chin, raising her face to view his. She was truly beautiful. As their lips met in a kiss that would be treasured for eternity, the rain began to beat harder upon them. Deepening the kiss, Robin placed her arms around his neck, feeling the passion burn within her soul.

They were laughing when they pulled apart. Needing no words for the moment, they held on to each other and ran for shelter, suspecting that a kiss in the rain was just the beginning.
