Take A Chance On Me

Chapters 1-2
Chapter 1
Setting: The Scorpio-Jones Residence
(Robin Scorpio walks up the stairs toward her old room at the Scorpio-Jones residence. She was exhausted… physically, mentally, emotionally. She was just spent. Robin opens the door to her old room and looks around her familiar settings. She debated staying here. Technically, she still owned the cottage and no one was currently living in it, but it felt odd being back where she once lived. Robin sighs. What part of this town didn’t hold a memory for her? She runs her hands through her hair. So, she stayed with good ol’ Uncle Mac. She was home… at least for now. Robin throws her bag on her bed then her body. She stares at the ceiling of her room. Jason had just been released from General Hospital and she felt completely relieved. She was so glad this part of her life is over. As much as she wanted to help Jason and see him through the end of his recovery, she couldn’t take much more of being a part of his complicated life. Robin sighs again. Jason’s life was always too complicated. There was a huge part of Robin that was grateful that his complications were no longer hers. If Sam wanted him, she was more than welcome to Jason and that included his baggage. Sam could have the guards, the flying bullets, the sleepless nights, the fights with Carly… she could have it all, even Jason’s love… because like everything else, Jason’s love came at a cost. She would have to live by his rules, by his code and as much as Robin missed him at times, she didn’t miss that. But even more than Jason, she missed love. And honestly, Robin didn’t even know if she missed Jason all that much, or if it was just the feeling of being in love that she longed for. Robin covers her face. This was all too much to think about tonight. Robin walks over to her closet and takes out her robe. She needed a nice, long shower to wash away all the grime that this week had left behind. It started out with an embarrassing, yet interesting twist when Patrick Drake walked in on her changing in the women’s locker room. He got to her in a way that no other man ever had, not even Jason. He was so arrogant, so confident and it just… frankly, it made him extremely attractive. Robin shakes her head as she walks down the hall toward the bathroom carrying her towels and bath gels. She opens the door and her mind goes back to the dinner she shared reluctantly with Patrick. That night had gone as expected until she fought with Carly. She hated her. She hated her so much. Robin clenches her fists slightly then looks at the bath gels in her hands. She almost popped one open. Robin laughs slightly then turns on the water of her shower. A good shower always helps. Robin glances at the small clock in the bathroom and notices that it reads 1:24 am. A good, hot shower then it was bedtime; she had to get some sleep. She definitely needed some sleep. Tomorrow would be a new day. In fact, it would be a completely new day. It would be the first time she faced Dr. Patrick Drake since he kissed her on New Years Eve. The kiss of compassion. Robin grunts as she stands firmly underneath the shower and closes her eyes. She couldn’t let him get to her. She couldn’t.)
- The Next Day
Setting: The Port Charles Dock
(Robin Scorpio walks down the docks coming from Kelly’s holding a bag filled with her breakfast. She had about twenty minutes to get to GH. She looks up when she sees the launch coming in from Spoon Island. Robin smiles as Nikolas approaches her.)
Robin: Nikolas.
Nikolas: Now, this is a pleasant surprise. (Smiles) Come here.
(Nikolas hugs Robin tightly then looks at her.)
Nikolas: Are you on your way to GH?
Robin (sighs): Yeah.
Nikolas: And how is that going?
Robin: It’s going.
Nikolas: Well, I’m heading there myself. Want some company?
Robin (smiles): I’d love some.
(Nikolas extends his arm and Robin interlocks hers with his. They start heading toward GH.)
Robin: Now, why are you walking toward GH?
Nikolas: I have to drop some things off with Liz.
Robin: Well, I’m glad I saw you. (Looks up at him) I feel like I’ve hardly seen you since I’ve been back.
Nikolas: Well, you’ve been busy healing a certain ex-boyfriend.
Robin (laughs): Ha, ha!
Nikolas: How is Jason?
Robin: Good, I guess. He’s home.
Nikolas: That doesn’t surprise me. (Looks at her) You’re a good doctor.
Robin (sighs): I try.
Nikolas: Elizabeth tells me you’re amazing.
(Robin just looks back at Nikolas.)
Nikolas: I may not see you as often as I’d like to, but I do have my ways of checking up on you.
Robin: Oh, that’s comforting.
Nikolas: It should be. (Looks at her) So, where are you living these days?
Robin: Up until this morning, with Uncle Mac.
Nikolas (smirks): With your Uncle?
Robin (laughs): No comment.
Nikolas: You know, I have space at Wyndemere.
Robin: And you also have a girlfriend and ex-wife. (Looks at him) You don’t need any more complications.
Nikolas: You’ll never be a complication, Robin.
Robin: But, still… I had to find a place to live; a place of my own.
Nikolas (smiles): You know… I just realized something.
Robin: What?
Nikolas: I owe you dinner.
Robin: Dinner?
Nikolas: Or lunch… or breakfast, whatever your schedule allows. And it should be at Café Matisse.
Robin (smiles widely): Café Matisse!
Nikolas: For old time’s sake.
(Just as they approach GH, Robin smiles and leans in toward Nikolas as he wraps his arm around her. It was really good to have Robin back in Port Charles. Before either could say anything, there is a voice heard behind them.)
Voice: Nice to see you don’t shut the entire world out, Dr. Scorpio.
(Nikolas turns around and Robin’s head shoots up. She grimaces slightly at the sight of Dr. Patrick Drake.)
Patrick: Does Morgan know he has competition?
(Nikolas slowly moves away from Robin and looks at Patrick.)
Nikolas: Let me guess… you’re the infamous Dr. Drake?
Patrick: And you’re the guy that has two women fawning all over him – the wife and the mistress, right?
(Nikolas’s mouth falls slightly as Robin simply shakes her head. Someone else gets to feel the charm of Patrick’s words.)
Patrick: Don’t I wish that I had some of your problems. You already have two beautiful women wanting to be with you and Dr. Scorpio seems to not mind being close to you either.
(Nikolas looks at Robin.)
Nikolas: Is he for real?
Robin: More real than you could ever believe.
(Nikolas looks back at Patrick.)
Nikolas: Get one thing straight, doc – my life is none of your business.
(Patrick smirks and looks back at Robin.)
Patrick: Really?
Nikolas: Yeah really.
(Robin gently touches Nikolas’s arm.)
Robin: Go talk to Elizabeth. I can handle this.
(Nikolas looks back at Robin.)
Nikolas: You’re sure?
Robin: Go. (Smiles) Happy New Year, Nikolas.
(Nikolas simply kisses Robin’s hand then looks straight at Patrick. After a few tense moments, Nikolas walks into General Hospital, leaving Robin and Patrick alone outside the doors of GH.)
Patrick: You’re avoiding me.
Robin (diverts her gaze): I’m doing no such thing. (Looks at him) I’m talking to you now, aren’t I?
Patrick: So, can we talk about it?
Robin: About what?
Patrick: What do you mean? About what? We kissed, Robin!
(Robin just shakes her head.)
Robin: There’s no need to discuss it.
Patrick: Do you go through your entire life like this? Only discuss the things that are neat and back away from the things that are messy?
Robin: No Patrick, me backing away from you has nothing to do with the fact that you are “messy.” I just don’t feel the need to discuss a kiss that should’ve never happened.
Patrick: Well, I disagree. That kiss was long overdue. And until you show me another way to shut you up, I’ll…
Robin: You’ll what? You’ll do it again? (Angrily) I’ll like to see you try.
(Patrick laughs and moves closer to Robin as she stands firmly in front of him. Just as he’s about to say something, Robin’s beeper goes off and she jumps away. She looks down at the number.)
Robin: I’m late for my first appointment.
(Robin turns around and walks directly toward GH. Patrick calls after her.)
Patrick: This conversation is far from over.
Robin: Yes, it is.
Patrick: Robin…
Robin: I’m going to work now. You should try it.
(Robin walks into GH and slams the door behind her. Patrick watches her then reluctantly follows her into GH.)
Setting: The Nurses’ Station at GH
(It’s in the middle of the day. Robin is talking to Elizabeth. Both women are laughing. Robin looks up and suddenly stops when Patrick approaches the station and grabs a folder. Elizabeth watches the interaction between them. Patrick glances at Robin then continues down the hall. Once he’s gone, Elizabeth looks at Robin.)
Liz: Uh… what was that about?
Robin (looking at a folder): What about?
Liz: The temperature dropped below zero when Dr. Drake came over to the Nurses’ station.
(Robin looks back up at Robin.)
Robin: Patrick… Dr. Drake is just…
Liz: Okay, what case are you two fighting about now?
Robin: What do you mean?
Liz: You two always seem to be clashing over something – a patient, their treatment. Who is it? Maybe I can be the mediator.
(Robin smirks.)
Robin: I don’t think you can mediate on this one, Elizabeth. (Smiles) Thanks for the offer, though.
(Robin grabs her folder and leaves the station as well. Elizabeth watches Robin leave and sighs. Whatever it was, it looked like she could handle it.)
Chapter 2
Setting: Kelly’s Diner
(Robin walks down the stairs of Kelly’s and heads toward, Mike who is behind, the counter.)
Mike: So, did the room meet your approval?
Robin: The room was perfect.
Mike: You’re sure?
Robin: Mike, it was fine. Thank you for holding it for me. (Sits on the stool) I had to leave Uncle Mac’s.
Mike (smirks): Started feeling like a teenager again?
Robin: No, it wasn’t that. (Laughs) Well, maybe. My hours are just crazy and Uncle Mac can’t help but wait up for me. The man seriously needed to get some sleep.
Mike: He just cares.
Robin: I know. Thinking about it, I hope I don’t keep my new neighbors up with my odd hours.
Mike: I don’t think that should be problem considering your neighbor.
(A confused Robin looks back at Mike.)
Robin: What do you mean…
(Before Robin can finish her statement, Patrick appears at the staircase leaving the second floor of Kelly’s. Their eyes lock immediately then she looks back at Mike.)
Robin: Patrick Drake…
(Patrick walks over to Robin and leans over her shoulder.)
Patrick: Is your new neighbor.
(Robin turns around and looks at Patrick directly.)
Robin: Wow! I’m shocked a neurosurgeon like you would even consider living above a family-owned diner.
Patrick: There’s a bed, right?
(Robin rolls her eyes.)
Robin: All the necessities for you, of course. (Looks back at Mike) Thank you, Mike, for the room. I’ll bring my stuff over tonight after I get off from GH.
(Robin hops off the stool and walks out of Kelly’s Diner. Patrick looks at Mike.)
Patrick: That goes for me too – thanks for the room.
(Patrick leaves Mike and runs out of the door of Kelly’s as well. He runs down the docks to catch up with Robin and finally does.)
Patrick: Seriously, what is your problem?
(Robin stops, turns around and looks at Patrick.)
Robin: Patrick…
Patrick: No, I’d really like to know. What are you annoyed about today? That I overheard what Carly said to you? Or what happened on New Years?
(Robin closes her eyes, just as Sonny and Jason appear behind Patrick.)
Sonny: What did Carly do?
Jason: And what happened on New Years?
(Robin opens her eyes and looks at Patrick then Jason and Sonny.)
Robin: Nothing.
(Sonny looks at Patrick.)
Sonny: Dr. Drake, what did Carly do?
Patrick: Did you ever think about getting your ex-wife fitted for a muzzle?
Jason (offended): Hey!
Patrick: And of course, you would defend her.
Robin: Patrick…
Jason: What is that supposed to mean?
Patrick: So, tell me – were you sleeping with both Robin and Carly at the same time?
Robin (upset): Patrick!
(Jason looks at Robin, as if she broke some confidence by telling him about her relationship with him, then turns back toward Patrick.)
Jason: I’d watch where you’re going with this.
Patrick: It figures that being with someone with HIV…
Robin (yells): Stop it!
(Patrick finally stops and looks at Robin.)
Robin (softly): Stop it, please.
(Patrick’s face softens as he looks back at Robin. He watches her turn back toward Jason and Sonny.)
Robin: The other night Patrick… he broke up an argument between me and Carly. (Looks at Jason) I’m sure he overheard a lot of stuff that… just… I’m sorry if he misunderstood anything.
Patrick: Don’t apologize for me, Robin. I clearly know what I heard.
Sonny (steps forward): What was the argument about, Robin?
(Robin just shakes her head and looks down. Patrick looks at Sonny.)
Patrick: Maybe you should have this conversation with Carly.
Sonny: But, I’m asking Robin.
(Robin looks back at Sonny.)
Robin: Sonny, there is no love loss between Carly and myself. You know that. And we have several topics to fight over. She knows exactly which buttons to press and I let her get the best of me.
Sonny: Well, you seem to be okay.
Robin (sighs): Yeah, I’m fine.
(Jason stares toward Robin. He could tell that she was lying and it was more than obvious that he was one of the topics Carly and Robin fought over. It became obvious the moment he saw how Patrick Drake looked at him. Before he looked at him with indifference and now it was clearly contempt… there was no mistaking that. He finally breaks his silence and looks toward Robin.)
Jason: And New Years?
Robin: Carly wasn’t involved.
Patrick: No…
(Patrick moves closer to Robin, a move that doesn’t go unnoticed by Robin or Sonny and Jason, and looks down toward her.)
Patrick: That was strictly Robin and myself.
(Robin looks up at Patrick and shakes her head slightly. He looks back at Jason and Sonny.)
Patrick: Actually, Robin and I were in the middle of a private conversation before you both rudely interrupted us. (Looks at her) Can we please finish it?
Robin (simply): It looks like I don’t have much of a choice. (Sighs) But, can it wait until after my shift? I have a consult in thirty-five minutes.
Patrick: So, do I. I’ll walk you.
(Jason and Sonny silently watch Robin and Patrick leave the docks and walk back toward GH. Sonny looks at Jason.)
Sonny: What do you think that was about?
Jason: Uh… Robin mentioned to me in the hospital that he flirts with her.
Sonny: And she likes him?
Jason: I don’t know.
Setting: Nurses’ Station at General Hospital
(Liz looks up from the chart she’s reading when she sees the elevator doors open and Patrick and Robin walk out of them. Robin looks at Patrick.)
Robin: Look, about what happened on the docks…
Patrick: You could thank me later.
Robin: I wasn’t going to thank you. (Looks at him) I was going to ask you not to get in Jason’s face.
Patrick: Because he’s a hired hit man?
(Robin rolls her eyes.)
Patrick: Or because you still have feelings for him?
(Robin looks back at him.)
Robin: Who I have feelings for is none of your concern. (Simply) You know… you spend a lot of time worrying about who I have feelings for, who I’m thinking about – maybe you should start thinking more about your own personal life and thinking about mine a little less.
Patrick: You don’t think I have a personal life?
Robin (laughs): Oh no, I know you have a personal life. I saw it firsthand, remember?
Patrick: You know what? You’re right. I have been worried about your personal life way too much. I apologize, Robin. I’m sorry for trying to bring you back to the forefront of society. I won’t make that mistake again.
(Robin swallows the lump in her throat and watches as Patrick walks away from her. He suddenly stops and Robin looks up, somewhat hopeful, toward him.)
Patrick: Oh, and that conversation, we were going to have after our shifts, we don’t need to have it. I’m done talking to you.
(Robin stands firmly in front of the elevators and watches Patrick disappear down the corridor of GH. Out of all the words Patrick threw at her over the last month or so, none of them had hurt her more than those. Liz looks up from the nurses’ station and watches as Robin looks down and re-gathers her composure then heads down the hall of GH. Something was going on between them… well, something was. Whatever it was, it looks like it’s over now.)
Setting: The Women’s Locker Room at GH
(It’s much later in the evening. Robin is tired, physically and mentally. She feels spent. She’s changing into her clothes to go home in. She looks up when Emily walks past her.)
Emily: Hey Robin.
Robin: Emily… hey.
Emily: You’re finally heading home?
Robin: Yeah, it’s been a long day. You?
Emily: I’m actually heading out for a bite with one of the doctors.
Robin: Oh, I hope you have fun.
Emily: So, what do you think you’re going to be doing tonight?
Robin (smiles): Tonight? I have about twenty boxes to unpack. My Uncle Mac called me and told me that all my stuff finally arrived from Paris.
Emily: Where are you staying?
Robin: For now, I just got a room above Kelly’s. Something simple.
Emily: I could use some of that in my life… simplicity.
Robin: Me too, believe me. (Stands up) Hey… maybe you’ll have some tonight on your date.
(Emily rolls her eyes.)
Emily: Who knows? Want to walk out together?
Robin: Yeah sure.
(Robin grabs her bag then walks out with Emily. She freezes slightly when she sees Patrick waiting right outside the locker rooms. She’s about to say something until he steps forward and walks toward Emily. Suddenly everything becomes crystal clear. Robin stops in her tracks and watches them. As they approach the elevator, Emily turns back around and looks at Robin.)
Emily: Are you coming? I could hold the elevator for you.
Robin: Actually… I… I forgot something in my locker. Go ahead.
Emily: Okay. Have a good night, Robin.
Robin: Thanks, Em. You too.
(Robin watches Emily and Patrick walk into the elevator. The perfect ending to the not-so-perfect day. Robin shakes her head then looks up when she feels Elizabeth next to her.)
Liz: Do you need a ride?
Robin: I’m fine walking.
Liz: Are you sure? Lucky’s picking me up downstairs.
(Just as she says that, Lucky appears coming out of the elevator.)
Liz: Or up here. (Smiles) What are you doing here?
(Lucky kisses Liz.)
Lucky: I wanted to make sure you were actually leaving. (Looks at Robin) Hey Robin… are you leaving too? We can give you a ride.
Robin: I really don’t mind walking.
Lucky: Well, it’s late and I really don’t mind dropping you off.
Liz: Then, it’s decided! Come on, Robin!
Setting: Robin’s Room above Kelly’s Diner
(It’s hours later and late in the evening. Robin is going through her boxes from Paris. Mac had them delivered directly to Kelly’s instead of the Scorpio house. She was grateful for Mac’s clear head. She obviously wasn’t thinking straight when the delivery service called saying that the boxes were ready to be shipped. The boxes are now sitting on top of Robin’s bed, where she probably should be sleeping, but she had too many thoughts running through her mind tonight for sleep. Robin opens the top box and sees her framed diploma from the Sorbonne. She smiles emotionally at the sight of it then traces it with her fingers. She didn’t regret any of the time she spent in Paris. Not one second of it. She loved the city. She probably could’ve just loved it more. Just like she loves being back in Port Charles, but there were ways she could probably love it more. Robin sighs as she places her diploma back in the box. She would hang up her photos first. Her and Brenda. She missed her so much. She really wishes that Brenda was back in Port Charles with her. It’s selfish, but she just misses her best friend. Brenda was always different. She was her only friend that truly knew her before the HIV; knew her heart, her soul, her dreams. She knew her before Jason broke her heart, before Carly torpedoed her life. Maybe Brenda wasn’t there for the end, but she knew where their relationship was going. Brenda wasn’t blind. She probably saw it before anyone else even did. Robin sits on top of her bed and looks down at the picture of her and Brenda. She would never find another best friend like her, someone she could confide in, who would know what she was thinking before she said it. She just wished Brenda was closer. Faintly, Robin could hear the sound of a door nearby opening then slamming shut. Patrick was back from his date with Emily. It was really late. Too late for just a quick bite. Robin couldn’t think about that. She wanted to go to bed. She needed to go to bed. Robin can hear the faint sound of a shower in the background. She stands up and finishes taking her things out of boxes. She could finish the rest tomorrow. Robin plops down on her new bed in her bedroom and stares up at the ceiling.)
Robin: Please let tomorrow be a better day.
