No More Wasted Moments

Authors Notes: Okay, I was just having this conversation with bookworm about coming up with too many fic ideas even when I have 3 fics going already! But, it happened again! After seeing that preview for Wednesday's eppy, I was inspired! So I wrote a one shot version of what could happen...but probably won't! I based it on what I saw in the previews and a spoiler I read. Warning...tissues may be needed!
Patrick hesitated a moment outside the door to Robin’s room,
taking a moment to look at her. Her face was turned away from him and she looked
like a small child all alone in that bed. His heart broke into a million pieces
and he tried to keep it from showing on his face. Taking a deep breath, he
walked in and sat down next to her bed.
She turned to look at him and he could tell that she had been crying. A single
tear that she hadn’t managed to brush away was still lying on her cheek. He
resisted the urge to wipe it away and instead said, "I just gave Alexis
Davis the final dose of the serum."
"Good." Robin said, giving him a tired smile.
"No, not really." Patrick said, shaking his head. "This means
that there is none left for you."
"Alexis has two little girls." Robin tried to explain. "Kristina
and Molly. Did you know that I delivered Molly?" she asked and Patrick
shook his head. "During the train wreck last fall. I performed an emergency
C-section in the middle of a tunnel."
"Impressive." He said sarcastically.
Robin could hear the bite in his voice and said, "Those girls need their
mother. They are depending on her and she needed to get the serum. Ric and the
girls count on her."
"There are a few people around here who count on you, too." Patrick
snapped. "I believe they are called patients. You know, those people whom
you champion and who I can’t stand?"
"Are you really going to argue with me about this?" Robin asked him.
Patrick shook his head and looked away. They sat in silence for awhile, until
Patrick finally asked, "Are you scared?"
"Should I be?" she asked quietly.
"I would." Patrick admitted. "If it were me."
"That’s not very reassuring, doctor." she informed him.
"Do you want reassuring or do you want the truth?"
Patrick and Robin locked eyes and finally she admitted, "The truth."
"That’s what I thought."
Quietly, Robin said, "I’ve led a good life, Patrick. I’ve been well
loved. Not everyone gets as much love in their lives as I have had in
mine." Patrick looked at her tenderly and could tell that she was trying
hard not to start crying again. Bravely, she continued, "My parents, Uncle
Mac, my whole crazy family, my friends, Stone...even Jason before everything
fell apart. I’ve known more love in my life than most people. And I should be
thankful for that."
"But...?" he encouraged her, sensing there was a regret in there
somewhere.
Robin was quiet for a moment before she said, "I never fell in love again
after Jason. It just hurt too much, you know? Losing Stone and then having Jason
turn his back on me...it just got to be too much." She blinked back the
tears that were threatening to fall and got a far away look in her eyes.
"There was a time that Jason said he would have died for me. And he meant
it. But somehow we lost that. We let go of each other when we should have been
holding on tighter than ever. But we didn’t and I lost him. And it hurt."
Robin turned her face away from him so he couldn’t see the pain and fear in
her eyes, but he could hear it loud and clear in her voice. "It was the
opposite with Stone. I never let go of him. We held on to each other until the
very end. But I lost him, too. I just couldn’t win. And I didn’t want to get
hurt like that again." She let out a humorless little laugh and said,
"But, as it turns out I only ended up hurting myself. Because here I
am...all alone."
"You’re not alone." Patrick replied, his voice heavy with emotion.
Robin turned back to look at him and was surprised by the tenderness she saw in
his eyes. "I’m sorry that we never got to go away for the weekend."
"We still can."
Robin shook her head. "I wasted a lot of time With you. With my family.
With my father. I was just so scared to do what was in my heart and now I may
not have another chance." She looked over at him and said, "You’re
right....I am a walking contradiction. Here I was willing people to live and I
never even took my own advice."
Not willing to listen to any more of her heartbreaking confession, Patrick said
forcefully, "Listen to me, Robin. You’re going to be okay."
She smiled tenderly and said, "Don’t make promises that you can’t
keep."
"I never have."
Changing the subject, Robin said softly, "You should make amends with your
dad."
"Should you really be doling out daddy advice?" He teased, but didn’t
really feel in the playful mood.
"It’s different with my dad." Robin said, shaking her head.
"Not really." Patrick disagreed. "He loves you Robin. He and Luke
are out right now tracking down a package from Cryllium Industries for the
antidote. You just have to hang on."
"Don’t let him fool you." Robin said quietly. "He loves the
adventure more. That’s why he stayed away. Having a kid cramped his
style."
"I don’t believe that." Patrick said, shaking his head.
Robin’s eyelids fluttered closed and she fought to keep them open as she
whispered, "I’m tired."
Running his hand over her fevered forehead, Patrick whispered back, "Go to
sleep, Robin."
Robin covered his hand with her own, intertwining her fingers with his.
"Stay with me."
"Don’t worry," he promised, "I’m not going anywhere."
