Kimberly Returns to GH

Ask Kimberly McCullough (Robin) why she came back to "General Hospital" despite a successful run on prime time, and she responds without a moment's hesitation.

"I wanted more," says the actress, whose last gig embraced the recurring role of Beth on "Joan of Arcadia." "I would do one scene and go home. I was like, 'God! That wasn't enough for me.' I don't feel I've worked hard since I left 'General Hospital.' "

So, McCullough eagerly returned to the daytime grindstone in 2005 when she resurrected Robin, a doctor living in Paris, who was summoned back to town to save Jason's life.

"I like the doctor part, because the medical [terminology] is always a challenge, and it's so far from anything I will ever do in my real life," says McCullough. "I'm sure I don't do any of it properly, but I try."

While McCullough has no aspirations in that direction, she would like to obtain her college degree in directing one day.

"I went to NYU for a year, and I've been going to community college on and off for the past few years," she says. "It's been tough. Every time I took a class, I would get a job and couldn't be there for the final. So I have a bunch of incompletes. Hopefully, I'll get my degree one day. I would like one, and it would make my dad happy."

In the interim, McCullough is focusing on her latest "General Hospital" stint, which has included a reunion with her TV parents, Finola Hughes (Anna) and Tristan Rogers (Robert), and an onscreen romance with Jason Thompson (Patrick).

"I was totally excited about the Scorpio family reunion," says McCullough, whose Robin finally got to confront her parents about playing dead and abandoning her as a teenager. "To Robin, her mother's faked death was more understandable, because Anna had lost her memory. This is why Robin is clearly more forgiving of her mother than her father. Robert, in fact, didn't lose his memory and kept tabs on his daughter from afar."

As for Robin's relationship with Patrick, McCullough finds it intriguing.

"I don't know what it is. It's hard to explain why I think Patrick and Robin's connection works," she says. "Maybe it's because it's never black and white. It's never like, 'Oh! Patrick is a saint now because he did this.' Obviously, Robin is gaining more respect for Patrick, but there's still a long way to go. The thing is, Patrick doesn't really have a relationship with any other girl on the show. They're all kind of surface, flirty and sexual. With Robin, it's a little bit deeper, and that's what makes it interesting."
