Hit:
Putting the Hospital Back in General Hospital

By RS

For a long time, the joke among new or casual viewers of General Hospital has been "Where is the hospital?"

Indeed, until recently fans have seen more of the hospital in the soaps psychadelic opening sequence than during the show itself. But just when it looked like GH should adopt a more appropriate title (like General Mobsters), the eponymous edifice was put back on the map by the reappearance of fan favorite Robin, who returned to the nest with a medical degree under her wing.

Virtually every new or returning character introduced since then draws a paycheck from the hospital: Patrick, Noah, Kelly, Epiphany. In addition, other townsfolk took jobs there, from teen candy stripers Maxie and Lucas to one-man crime-wave Manny. And characters who already worked there, like Lainey, Elizabeth, Bobbie and Emily, were finally given some on-the-job airtime.

Resuscitating the titual institution has given the show greater clarity and focus, not to mention a compelling back-drop for a variety of stories. Taking a page from the show's golden years, GH's writers have found clever and inventive ways to weave many of the show's storylines through the tapestry of the hospital - from the virus to John's paternity scandal to Lucky's drug addiction. All a welcome relief from the tired mob machinations.

GH should stick with it, because with the outlook only partly Sonny, things couldn't be brighter.
