Physician's Reference
Jason Thompson, (Dr. Patrick Drake)
How would you describe Patrick's bedside manner?
"Not much of one. There's a part of him that shuts down emotionally because he has been hurt in the past. That's his safety net, not getting close to anyone. He's more of a mechanic. He goes in, fixes the car, and gets out."
Was Patrick's father, Noah, his inspiration to practice medicine?
"Definitely. He looked up to his dad. The animosity between them is from what happened after his mother's death and then [Noah's] alcoholism messed everything up. While there's no respect now, Patrick has respect for what his father was capable of at one time."
How much of you is in Patrick?
"Not that much. Enough to get me by [laughs], but I'm not as pompous or cocky as him. Honestly, I don't think I'm as good at anything as he is with surgery, so I don't have anything to be that pompous about. And, I'm not a big womanizer."
How are you dealing with the medical jargon?
"We have medical assistants on the set, so they help us out, whether it be big words or how to insert IVs. There are some big words that I have no idea what they mean. I write them out in layman's terms to make t hem sound right. You watch the actors on ER or GREY'S ANATOMY and they spit this stuff out with amazing grace. It's inspiring to get that good and be that confident in what you're saying."
Did you do any research for the role?
"I got the job on Friday and I was on set on Monday, so I watched a lot of TV that weekend [laughs]."
It must look like a hospital in the commissary since GH and GREY'S ANATOMY tape on the same lot.
"Yeah! Everybody's talking about surgery [laughs]. There are a lot of doctors running around here."
