WHO ARE THEY?

From: "Highlander," a science fiction show centered around a secret race of Immortals, who could only be killed by cutting off their heads.  They battle each other to be the last Immortal left alive.

Methos (actor Peter Winfield) is the oldest living Immortal, over 5000 years old, so old he doesn't even remember how old.  Wily, cunning, and dedicated to his own survival, he's done and been many things, including a ruthless marauder who raped and killed many centuries earlier.   He hides himself from other Immortals in the ranks of the Watchers, figuring to hide from the Watchers and steer clear of other Immortals at the same time, and does so successfully, until he meets Duncan.  

Duncan McCloud, aka the Highlander (actor Adrian Paul) is a relatively young Immortal at only about 400 years old.  Idealistic, moralistic, and compassionate, he's done things in the past that he isn't proud of but strives to do the right thing.  Devastated by the murder of the mortal woman he loved Tessa,  Duncan moved back to Paris, France, where he would discover the Watchers secret, and meet the oldest one of them all, Methos.

WHY THEM?

I actually started watching this show as a shipper for the pairing of Tessa and Duncan.  I loved those two together and lost interest in the show after they killed her off.  It wasn't until I caught an episode with Methos in it that I started watching again.  There was something about this character, this wily Immortal who was cunning and suave, all at the same time, that appealed to me.  I was hooked, and Methos became my favorite character.

But like my love for the slash pairing of Jim and Blair from "The Sentinel," it wasn't until I became involved in the slash fandom of Jack and Daniel from "Stargate SG1" that I became involved in the Methos/Duncan fandom.  I started reading fanfiction for these two and found myself intrigued, and I kept right on reading!

There's something about Methos and Duncan that is fascinating.  It seems to be a common perception in the fandom that after over 5000 years on this realm Methos would have experimented with same sex sex. Duncan is another matter, with him being thought of as both a novice and bi.  There's something about a man who has been around for so many years, yet looks as young as Methos did, being paired with a man who looks older then him, but is actually a babe in comparison, that is intriguing.  Methos, with his survivalistic outlook on life, his determination to look out for number one and perhaps an occasional friend only.  While Duncan seemed more determined to save the world, most especially the people around him, with little thought to his own survival.  Something about them seemed to click, and as good friends on the show, a slash pairing wasn't that far fetched.
